Fumigants are pesticides that are volatile and exert their toxic action as poisonous gases in an enclosed space. Fumigation is a versatile technique that can be applied in a wide range of situations. It should be undertaken only when management is satisfied that a need to carry out pest control exists, that fumigation is the appropriate process, and that the fumigation may be safely and effectively carried out. In U.A.E. fumigation of commodities in the export trade is mandatory for quarantine or contractual reasons.
Fumigation Services from Cosmos are useful where a rapid kill of pests is required and for effective removal of pests from structures into which clean commodities are to be brought.
Over the years fumigation has changed rapidly in Dubai, UAE and Cosmos Pest Control is up to date with all procedures and treatments for the fumigation services it provides.
There are many different types of fumigation available and Cosmos can undertake the following Fumigation Services in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and UAE.
Container fumigation is the treatment of a commodity or the container itself to eliminate the risk of pests or disease from entering or leaving the country or state.
A container normally comes in two sizes – 20’ and 40’ containers (although you can also get 10’, 45’ containers as well as what is called a “High Cube”. Most containers are 8.6’ high where as a high cube is 9.6’ high).
A container can be fumigated in two ways:
Pressure decay fumigation involves the pressure testing of the container to value. If the container can maintain that value for a time duration then the container is classified as “Gas Tight” and therefore may be fumigated without tarping.
Tarped fumigation is when no pressure decay is used or the container fails pressure decay. The container is covered with a gas proof fumigation tarp and sand snaked around all of the edges to achieve and maintain a gas seal.
Shipping fumigation involves the treating of the holds of a ship (whether they be full of commodity or empty) or the treatment of certain areas within the super structure of the ship itself.
With exports the holds of the ship have to be inspected for cleanliness and insect activity prior to loading. If anything is found fumigation treatment may be required.
The product going into the hold may also be infected which in turn infects the hold so fumigation treatment may be required.
With imports the consignment may have been infected prior to loading offshore and as part of many countries import requirements the consignment (as well as the vessel itself) must be pest and disease free.
Commodity fumigation is the treatment of product by a gas, chemical or other process to eliminate the risk of pest infestation.
A commodity can be described as anything from grain to personal effects imported or exported from on country or state to another.
The commodity can be by itself (loose or LCL – loose container load), in container (FCL – full container load), silo or ship.
Commodities such as food grains, oilseeds, pulses, extractions, spices, tobacco, textile, timber etc., which are major items in today’s export market, are highly susceptible to infestation from stored grain pests during storage and transit. This infestation can cause extensive damage. Also, the strict quarantine and regulatory requirements of various nations mandate a pest-free shipment. Fumigation (or the use of a gas in an enclosed space to kill pests) as a curative control technique is an indispensable requirement; lethal to all stages of insect development - eggs, larvae, pupa and adult, it not only kills live infestations, but also helps to check the spread of unwanted pests from one country to another.
